Scholarship Information

 Scholarship Program

 Fall – 2011 / Spring - 2012

 The Program

BAHRMA has established a scholarship program to help finance higher education in the HR profession for its members. The program will be managed by a Scholarship Committee consisting of individuals selected by the  BAHRMA Board of Directors. Scholarships are given without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, disability, or national origin.  

Eligibility

Applicant must be a current BAHRMA member or a relative of a current BAHRMA member. Applicant must currently study or work in the HR field and meet all of BAHRMA membership qualifications. Scholarship recipients’ must be active members of BAHRMA for the term of the awarded scholarship for it to remain in force. Applicant must be a high school graduate or GED recipient, or undergraduate college student. Applicant must be planning to enroll or be enrolled in a full-time course of study (minimum of 12 college hours or the equivalent) at one of the following local colleges:

  • Rice University
  • San Jacinto Community College
  • University of Houston – Clear Lake
  • University of Houston – Main Campus

Applicant must apply each year to be considered for the award.  A scholarship may be awarded to an applicant multiple times provided they meet all criteria and are selected by the Scholarship Committee.

Family members of the BAHRMA BOARD OF DIRECTORS are not eligible for this scholarship program.  Family members are defined as spouse, biological, adopted, or stepchildren who reside with a BAHRMA BOARD OF DIRECTORS member.

Scholarship Awards

A total of $2000 in scholarships will be awarded annually. Scholarship amounts must be applied to tuition, books, lab fees, and related school fees.  Amounts cannot be applied to room and board.  The number of recipients and scholarship amounts are to be determined by the Scholarship Committee on an annual basis and in accordance with the number of applicants, their qualifications, and course of study.  

Additionally, a $500 scholarship will be awarded annually to a BAHRMA member to be used towards the cost of classes or training material needed to obtaining their PHR, SPHR or GPHR certification.  

Application Process 

  1. Applicant must submit a completed BAHRMA Scholarship Application. 
  2. Applicant must submit the most current transcript of courses completed reflecting GPA as : High School – Final transcript indicating graduation, or College – Latest semester completed, or
  3. Applicant must submit completed Declaration of Applicant.  
  4. Applicant must submit completed Accomplishments and Career Goals in this form.
  5. Applicant must submit a copy of their official SAT/ACT scores if applicable.
  6. Applicant must be a US citizen or authorized to work in the US.
  7. Application forms and instructions are located on the BAHRMA website.  Completed packet should be mailed to.

Applicants are solely responsible for gathering and submitting all necessary information. Omission of any information will make the application null and void.  All information submitted is confidential and will be reviewed only by the Scholarship Committee. 

Recipient Selection

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of educational and career goals.

Scholarship awards will be based on Scholarship Committee recommendations and available funds. Not all applicants will receive awards. 

All applicants will be notified of their status no later than August 1, 2011.

Payment of Scholarships

Scholarship payments will be made in two equal installments – if you do not qualify (pass) you will not be eligible for the second installment. If you do not qualify (pass) after the second installment, if may affect your ability to qualify for this program again in the future.

Payments will  coincide with the school’s schedule. Checks will be mailed to the Financial Aid Department of the recipient’s school.  It will be the recipient’s responsibility to furnish the address of the Financial Aid Department to the Scholarship Committee so that the installment checks can be directed appropriately. 

Obligation

Scholarship recipients must enroll in their educational programs no later than fall of the year in which their awards are given. They are, however, required to provide BAHRMA with current transcripts providing recipients’ cumulative GPA and proof of current enrollment for the next semester. Their cumulative GPA must not fall below 2.0 to continue payment of scholarships.  Copy of transcript must be presented on a per semester basis before the next scheduled award will be released.  Notice of any changes of address, school enrollment, or other pertinent information is required to continue payment.   

Revision Policy

The general conditions and procedures under which scholarships are awarded are subject to periodic review by the officers of BAHRMA including termination of the program.
